As we are working on improving our archery we often forget what the true "fix" to our flaws are. It's way too easy to start moving the stabilizers, add more weight, change this and that, and so on.
"The problem with archery today is people are often working on the wrong thing" - Tim Gillingham.
You're working on the wrong thing
- That which has the most effect on your shot is your technique. It's not the fancy equipment. The bow will always do the exact same thing. See the image for the relative importance.
- We are not shooting machines. A properly setup bow will only make it more forgiving for us, but it will not fix bad technique.
What should be fixed first?
1. Form issues that cause the flaw
- Posture
Are you standing up straight? - Improper technique
Is your technique at least moderately consistent? - Lack of directed pressure or loss of pressure
Is the pressure between you and the bow staying constant and consistent while you're aiming and shooting? - Muscle tension
Are you using more muscles than you need to perform the shot? Relax..!
2. Equipment Fit
Is your bow tuned to you or are you tuning to the bow?
- Peep height
- Draw lenght
- Release aid fit
3. Tuning issues - lack of forgiveness
- Wheel timing
- Arrow selection
- Rest Adjustment
- Accessory setup
4. Stabilization issues
- Improper lenght bars - leverage
- Too much weight - Inertia and shooter strenght
- Location or angle - Moment of inertion
