The squad!

Since the qualification round was cancelled, the play offs were both the start and the end of the official 2024 sevens season. This year’s squad could boast about an influx of players from the junior section – young legs and good hands is just what you need during sevens!

The Uppsala squad arrived in Enköping early on Saturday morning, bar two players who drove to a different Korsängens IP an hour away. Maud and Sigrid were therefore immediately, and still in their absence, named Dicks of the day. The first game against Vänersborg was a typical first game of the tournament, the one where you have a chance of surprising your opponents. Sure, the game ended with a 7-24 loss, but Uppsala had a good feeling and maybe it still wasn’t really what last year’s finalists had expected. Up next was Lugi, who played smart and controlled and won 14-31. Those two tries were a cause of celebration though, and the players were pumped for the last game of the day against Göteborg. By this time Uppsala were one player down since Steamy suffered a concussion, but the players left on the roster was all the gas needed for a 43-7 win to end the first day of the tournament!

Sunday morning was a bit rough on the veterans, but good spirits and thorough warm up prevailed. The quarter final draw put Uppsala against some well known opponents from the capital city, i e Stockholm Exiles. They proved too big a number (0-24) which put Uppsala into the plate semi against Wexiö; fairly unknown opposition as the two teams had never previously met. A small but loud supporter crowd by pitch B saw some great tackles and quick thinking when the ladies in blue managed to scrape together a 24-7 win, putting URFC in the plate final against Malmö! In their last game, Uppsala struggled to contain Malmö’s speedy center and after a 0-31 loss on tired legs, they ended up in 6^th place.

Compared to last year, this was (both execution and results) an improvement, and both players and coaches were happy with the weekend over all.
