A tough road ahead

Once again the Degerfors girls find themselves facing a tough game tomorrow as they travel to play another strong team in the Elitserien, Örebro. Moving into this league the club certainly knew it would be a tough year for the team, and winning many games wasn't in the cards. However despite these facts, this is still the game of volleyball, and we all know anything can happen. Örebro has played two games so far with two very different roster on the court. So identifying exactly what their strong suit is, or preparing to fight against a particular aspect is difficult to identify. Based on their statistics though, the team appears to be very strong in all elements of the game, with a variety of players to do so.
For the Orion girls, once again we are setting our sights on smaller goals within our game. So far the team has successfully executed every goal we've set, and with some time and patience a win is on its way! Building on previous games' goals, a strong block, defense, reception, and service are still expected. Which doesn't leave too much else out! But there are still many elements to work with, and for this match in particular the goal is to eliminate our own unforced errors. The match against Linköpings on Sunday revealed just how many mistakes we are making by ourselves, and how difficult it is to win a set by doing so. It would be great for Örebro to have to truly earn the win, instead of us handing it to them directly.
Although there has only been two days since our last game, the season is now in full swing. The time to continue building from match to match is now, and hopefully with each game played, more experience is found, and the hard work will eventually pay off with a victory. Thank you for your continuous support!
First set win!

As predicted Örebro was very strong. Certainly the hardest game for us so far. The first set was very disappointing as the team didn't have their usual dynamic atmosphere. Not only did we not achieve our goal of reducing our own direct mistakes, we made things even worse for ourselves by not having a good serve or serve receive. Örebro was very strong at the line, and pretty much served us off the court. Unfortunately with no reception, there's no attack. So there really wasn't much of a fight in that first set.
However the glimmer of positivity came in the second set when the team woke up. The girls dug deep and managed to find themselves again, and show this neighboring team that we aren't just gonna let them kill us 3-0. Degerfors managed to lead the entire set, and stay strong to close it. This is amazing for the team, since the past experiences of leading in sets have always resulting in the other team catching back up and beating us. The mental strength and focus of the girls to do so proves that we are still evolving as a team and still taking steps forward.
Unfortunately after the 15 minute break between sets 2 and 3, Örebro picked up the pace even more which we knew would happen. Coming off of their set loss, they were determined to show their strength to the team. And they did. They served extraordinarily well which worked. Degerfors was barely able to produce free balls back, and when we did, they counter attacked with authority. Despite the girls' valiant effort in the second set, the team never really showed up.
Orion should be proud that despite our poor performance throughout the match, we still managed to dig deep and produce something positive, even for just one brief set. The mental strength of closing out a set is often difficult for a new team, but we found a way to do it against a much stronger opponent.
The team should carry forward with only the second set in mind going into Saturday's game against Gislaved. Saturday's match shows real promise for achieving our first win, but the girls will have to find their game back to do so. We hope that all of our supporters will come out to help, and bring lots of noise and encouragement! See you Saturday at 15:00!
